While at a gas station this afternoon, I overheard a conversation between a grade school age boy and his father. They were discussing different accents. The boy declared that people from Boston sound like people from England. His father, rather than contradicting the boy, asked why he thought that. To which the boy replied, "Because Britain owns Boston."
Is that what they're teaching in school these days?
I was at the gas station because I went to KC today. I had lunch with my parents, then went to my grandmother's to do a little work on her computer. She was born in 1920, a time before quite a few of the technological delights we enjoy today. I was born in 1980, making my formative years just a tad more technologically influenced. So I went in and made a new folder for saved emails, changed the contrast on the monitor so things didn't look funny (since someone else went in and changed the contrast to begin with, making things look funny), that sort of thing.
I used to get over there more often than I do now...I really miss it. I miss the family time, the gourmet food, and the drive. I miss seeing the KC skyline near the intersection of I-70 and I-635. I've always liked driving. When I was younger, I would get in my car and drive (literally) around KC. There's just something peaceful for me about driving...though I may have a list of things to do, when in my car my sole job is to keep the car on the road and away from the other cars. I can think, I can even worry if I want. But the option isn't there to do anything. I'm the sort of person who thinks of something, does it, then realizes that perhaps other options might have gone better. So there's a greater chance of me thinking through the consequences of an action if I'm driving when I think of it. It's definitely not a foolproof plan, but I'm sure it works well every few years.
Also, a special message for my sister....

Do you mean to suggest ... that Britain *doesn't* own Boston?
Oh man. My world is now turned upside down.
