Lasik Update

At my first few appointments after I got Lasik, I was seeing 20/15. That's almost x-ray vision. At my last appointment I was seeing 20/30 in my right eye. To give an idea of what that means, I can't read words on a television across the room (and not a big room). My left eye is better than that, but not great. So I will be getting an enhancement in both eyes as soon as we're sure they've stopped regressing.

Evidently some amount of regression is to be expected when one's eyesight is as bad as mine was, but the doctor who looked at my eyes this morning said that she'd never seen regression like mine. Lucky me.

It's frustrating to have to wear contacts to see. Without them, I can't read street signs until I'm right on top of them (especially at night), can't read anything on TV, sometimes I can't even tell who the guest is while "not" watching the various talk shows on in the waiting room at work.

On top of that, my eyes are on the dry side for contacts right now. I expected them to be dry after Lasik, and they're actually not that bad. They're just not quite up to hydrating contacts for an extended period of time.

So things are a little frustrating right now, visually speaking. I can't get my enhancement until at least the middle of October (the earliest those things are done), and I'll probably postpone that for a while. I want to allow extra time after my eyes are definitely settled, just in case. Multiple enhancements are not desirable, and it's in my best interests to space out the eye-drying activities as much as possible. Sort of like giving concrete extra time to cure.

Between now and then, I'm on mild steroid drops for irritation and not-so-mild artificial tears to keep things juicy.

All that said, I am a long way from taking being able to see for granted. Sure, I may not be able to see the TV with the sharp clarity I could not so long ago, but I'm a very long way from where I was before, which was closer to, "TV? There's a TV over there? I just see a wall. At least I think it's a wall....it could be a camel, or the Pyramid of the Sun." I can tell when there's a guest host on Regis and Kelly without squinting, and I'm not really bothered if I can't quite make out who's doing the cooking segment with Al Roker. Actually, now that I think about it, maybe I don't really need that enhancement. There are things to be said for indistinct vision....
